Students engaging in online learning for the first time encounter an environment that is significantly different from anything that they have previously experienced in their traditional classrooms. Their success greatly depends on how well they are prepared to function in that environment. Instructors can minimize most future problems by ensuring that students have the requisite level of technology skills, that they have access to the required technology, and that they clearly understand that their role as student will change dramatically. They must assume far greater responsibility and initiative.
