1-1 Purpose of Instructional Objectives

An instructional objective is a statement of the new capability that is intended to result from instruction, e.g., what learners should know and be able to do as a result of participating in the learning activities. Objectives should be stated as specifically as possible, using action verbs that describe behaviors that can be observed and measured. Objectives serve the important purposes of helping to

  • Select appropriate methods and materials
  • Commit to creating a learning environment in which the objectives can be reached
  • Ensure that learners understand exactly what is expected of them
  • Assure proper assessment
