| Intellectual
property can be loosely defined as “the product of one’s
efforts to produce scholarly evidence of the application of knowledge
and research.” Academic institutions’ policies on intellectual
property may differ. So, it is important that you determine your
particular institution's policy in this area.
LSU
System Policy
The Bylaws
and Regulations and Permanent Memoranda of the Board of Supervisors
of the Louisiana State University System outline the requirements
and restrictions for faculty employed within the System. According
to Chapter VII, Section 7-1, General Policy of the Bylaws and Regulations,
“LSU encourages and expects its personnel to engage in creative,
scholarly activities as part of their duties. All LSU personnel
are required to bring to the attention of an appropriate LSU officer,
at an early date, any discoveries, inventions, and works potentially
subject to legal protection under patent, copyright, or other law.
The inventor, the inventor’s department, and the inventor’s
campus gain prestige, and in some cases financial benefits from
commercializing an invention or discovery. Such commercialization
is consistent with, and complementary to, LSU's academic mission.”
Chapter VII of the Bylaws and Regulations continues to define classes
on intellectual property and describe the proprietors of each.
