Analyze: Topic 1 - Online Learners

1-1 Overview

It should come as no surprise to the experienced educator that the first consideration in developing an online course is to know your student audience. The following are some factors that you should explore:

  • General student characteristics—age, gender, educational level, culture/linguistics, number of students expected to enroll in the course.
  • Entry competencies—existing knowledge/skills related to the course, academic skills, proficiency with technology
  • Motivational factors—reason for taking the course, how course knowledge/skills will later be used
  • Environment and resources—technology requirements, access

This information will help you to design a course that can lead to student success.
